Bavaria 42 Vision — Sailing Muggle — Custom Solar Arch
Quick Summary
Design Type
Eiviva + Solar Frame (Custom)
This project for a Bavaria 42 Vision at Gosport Premier Marina, UK, was carried out during the winter of 2022/2023. The client chose to leave a settled lifestyle to live on board full-time, sailing worldwide in search of new adventures. As such, the solar arch needed to support extensive functionality while facing forward despite the backstay obstructing the optimal position. Our task was to design a solar arch capable of carrying 4 × 300W solar panels, integrated with the pushpit, with a removable panel support system allowing the option to reduce the number of solar panels and free up cockpit space. Additional requirements included integrating a U-shaped davit system, flagpole bracket, extended safety rails (over 3 metres), a life raft cradle with an automatic rope-cutting system, a passerelle bracket, a 5-way antenna bracket, an additional inner grab rail on the stern frame, and mirror-polished corner caps on the transom — all while ensuring no interference with the Bimini. After accepting the task, we began several weeks of planning and discussions before fabrication commenced. The arch was constructed with the inner rail in place but without the panel bearing frame or davit, except for pivot points — allowing flexibility for necessary adjustments. The swivel support arm and davit were carefully bent to match the arch's shape and provide seamless support for the solar panel frame. The panel bearing frame was designed to carry 4 × 300W solar panels while avoiding the backstay, which passes through the middle of the arch. A 5-way aerial bracket was designed to replicate the classic 5-way candle lamp style. The passerelle bracket and life raft cradle were mounted at the transom ends of both starboard and port pushpits. Extended safety rails replaced the traditional midship stanchion gates, forming a smoothly integrated rail running from midship into the solar arch. The final design was complex but practical, offering multiple functions including additional cockpit shade and a cohesive aesthetic that complements the yacht without appearing cluttered. After several years of sailing, the clients report operating completely off-grid from day one of the solar installation, with no issues encountered since.
